Stock Manager (2IC) - Brownrigg Agriculture - Poukawa

  • Located in Poukawa, just 20 minutes south of Hastings.
  • Well-remunerated position reflecting the importance of this role.

WHERE

Brownrigg Agriculture is a largescale farming agribusiness situated in Hawke’s Bay, growing a range of natural farm produce of excellent provenance. Recently, changing the way they farm to offer more career progression to their valued team, the management structure has been reviewed and amalgamation of ten farms to five enables a greater level of on-farm leadership & responsibility. The last of the Farm Manager roles to be appointed was at Poukawa, the finishing powerhouse, which saw the Stock Manager (2IC) being internally promoted to the Farm Manager role.

With an overall farming footprint of 9,000+ ha of freehold and leasehold land, Poukawa is a 2,200ha mixed farming operation, with lamb and beef finishing combined with high value cash crops in the summer. Comprising a 1200ha grazing platform, the contour encompasses 400ha steeper hills, 500ha of easy rolling hills and the balance are flats.

WHAT

This Stock Manager (2IC) role is a great learning opportunity and will support the Farm Manager to drive farm performance and ensure the smooth operations of the farm. In the absence of the Farm Manager the shepherds on the block will report directly to this position.

This role will suit someone who is keen on finishing. This is an experience that won’t be found elsewhere with the scale, technology, and exposure to forage types via the in-house agronomy team. The peak workload is winter and spring allowing for a work life balance with some time off over the summer off season.

The Stock Manager (2IC) will be actively involved in the following key areas in conjunction with the Farm Manager:
  • Implementing farm policies and plans and helping to organise daily on-farm operations.
  • Ensuring the welfare and performance of all livestock on the farm unit is optimised.
  • Make sure feed quality targets and grazing plans are achieved.
  • Help to lead farm staff on a day-to-day basis and assist the manager in developing staff with core skills.
  • Participate in an active personal development plan.
  • Champion a safe and healthy work environment on the farm and ensure those under supervision go about their work in a safe manner.
WHO

Brownrigg Agriculture is looking for a driven Stock Manager (2IC) with a strong desire towards continual progression.

The below are key to success in this role:

  • Pastoral farming experience.
  • The ability to muster livestock safely and efficiently on farm and manage them in the yards.
  • Pasture management skills.
  • Strong time management and communication skills.
  • Good relationship and people supervision skills.
  • A team of 3-5 working dogs.
  • Basic administrative and record keeping skills (accurate tallies are really important).
  • Solid grasp of farm-based technologies (smart phones and weigh equipment).
  • Ability to use a handpiece for dagging and crutching.
  • A sense of humour, flexibility and be a strong team player.

WHY

  • Brownrigg Agriculture has a strong culture of its own and in-itself is a thriving and busy community.
  • There will be plenty of professional development on offer including involvement in the Shepherd’s annual reviews.
  • This is a well-remunerated position reflecting the importance of this role to the business.
  • The location offers a lot of schooling and recreational opportunities and Hawke’s Bay is also home to a variety of outdoor activities from beaches, wineries, sporting, and social opportunities.
  • Good work life balance.
