WHERE

R&C Buddo Trust is a high performing family-owned farming business, located 20 minutes south of Hastings and Havelock North in the Poukawa district. Owned and operated by Rob & Coral Buddo with an overriding emphasis on balancing the four pillars of the business: people, profit, planet and progress. R&C Buddo Trust is Gap Assured allowing them to supply premium lamb to Atkins Ranch and they also graze and finish Wagyu Steers for Firstlight Foods, alongside their Friesian bull finishing.

The business totals 1357ha and is a mix of leased and business owned all located within a 5-15-minute drive of the main home block, with a 65:35 ratio sheep to cattle. All blocks have a high level of infrastructure supporting the farming operation. There is a well-defined business plan within this modern farming system and the business is run as an inclusive team environment.

WHAT


Reporting to the owner and supervised by the Operations Manager, the Shepherd will work across all blocks covering all aspects of farming with an emphasis on livestock production, giving the appointee a well-balanced understanding of finishing beef and lamb to scale.

Working autonomously as well as cooperatively within the team of 4-5 permanent and casual employees across the blocks you will have confidence in your abilities whilst also knowing when to ask for help e.g. bull shifts, and busy periods. A key competency is the ability to follow instructions and complete tasks independently and safely.

Over the year the role is balanced out to a ratio of 80:20 stock to general work. Stock work will include rotational grazing, break fencing, yard work, picking, weighing, and drenching. You will require a small team of 2-4 efficient working dogs. The general component will include general tractor work, cropping, shifting of irrigators and water reticulation, an understanding of fault finding and erecting of electrics fencing. Training will be given as needed.

Our client is looking for an enthusiastic shepherd with 2+ years’ experience and a willingness to grow and develop to fulfil an immediate need within the business due to growth. The below will be key to your success:

  • Sound animal husbandry & basic knowledge of pasture management.
  • Accurate record keeping.
  • Competency in or willingness to be trained in computer-based support tools such as FarmIQ and excel spreadsheets.
  • Be able to work autonomously with a get-up and go attitude.
  • Team player with excellent communication skills.
  • General skills - tractor, irrigation, temporary electric fencing etc.
